The Memorial over the Mass Grave for the Victims of the Death March

Książenice, Poland

This is the memorial that stands over the mass grave in Książenice. The names of prisoners from Auschwitz-Birkenau who were murdered during the death march are engraved upon it. The memorial was dedicated on the 20th of May 2008 in an emotional ceremony led by students of the advanced course of the Israel Security Agency in the presence of the local priest Roman Laksa, local residents and the Pastel family. The Pastel family came from France in order to recite the memorial prayer Kaddish for the first time at the grave of their grandfather, David Pastel, who had been among the victims of the death march.

Each one of the victims of the death march buried in this mass grave, many of them Jewish, was an entire world; a world of dreams and love, of creativity and faith. We have sought to restore their names and identities to them.

To read their personal stories, click on the victims' names and numbers that are engraved on the memorial.
