Hanka Mendlinger, born in 1936, is photographed here in the arms of her nanny, whose name she does not remember. This nanny would later save her life by hiding little Hanka in her home in Bratislava. Hanka's aunt Nelly placed her with the nanny, and her sister with another Christian family. Neither Nelly, her husband, nor Hanka's parents survived. In February / March of 1945 Hanka was caught, and sent to Theresienstadt.
