Jozef Kowner (1895 - 1967)
Born in Kiev, Kowner moved with his family to Lodz during his childhood. After the German occupation, he was interned in the Lodz ghetto, where he became one of only two painters employed by the Judenrat. He worked in the textile workshop, designing carpets. In 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and then to various forced labor camps. He was liberated from Ludwigslust. After liberation, he settled in Sweden, where he was a prolific artist.
