Wöbbelin concentration camp, a subcamp of Neuengamme concentration camp, was established in February 1945 to hold prisoners evacuated from other camps in order to prevent their liberation by the approaching Allied forces. At its height the camp housed approximately 5,000 inmates. Wöbbelin was liberated by American troops on May 2, 1945, who found around 1,000 corpses strewn throughout the camp.
