Zionist activities grew in Wieliczka between the two World Wars, as youth movements were organized and wide-ranging cultural programs were offered. Many men fled the town with the approach of the Germans in 1939. Wieliczka became the only town with an all female Judenrat. Women also performed the forced labor until the men returned. On August 26, 1942 a large scale Aktion occurred during which some Jews were selected for labor with the majority being sent to the Belzec death camp.
