On the tin plate made by Elie Kalinski while he was imprisoned in the Drancy internment camp in France, he engraved the words “Hope and Happiness” and the names of his cousins, Madelaine and Leon. In the center of the plate Elie engraved the date of his arrival at the camp: 20.8.1941. The plate was sent to his cousins.
In April 1942 Kalinski was transferred to the Compiegne transit camp. Some two months later he was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was murdered. Elie's cousins, Madelaine and Leon, survived as did their father Solomon, who donated the plate to Yad Vashem.
