In 1942 and 1943, German Jews were deported by the tens of thousands directly to the extermination camps, mainly to Auschwitz. Some forty-two thousand Jews from Germany, mostly elderly people and those with "privileged status," were sent to Theresienstadt; the majority either perished there or were deported to the extermination camps.
