An illustrated plaque for a Torah Ark, that symbolically depicts the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The Tablets of the Covenant with the Ten Commandments stand at the crest of a lush green hilltop with a starry sky in the background. The Tablets, topped by a crown adorned with a Star of David, stand amidst flames of fire. The panel bears the artist's signature: I. Eisikowicz.
The painted plaque was among various artifacts and Judaica from abandoned synagogues that had accumulated at the end of the war in the warehouses of the Jewish community in Cernăuți (today Chernivtsi, Ukraine). Some of these items were brought back to the city by Jews who had been deported to Transnistria and later returned. The plaque was kept in the storerooms of the Jewish community until it was given to Yad Vashem for safekeeping, in a campaign initiated by Yad Vashem in the 1990s to collect and rescue artifacts and Judaica remaining in Romania after the war.
The plaque is on display in the Yad Vashem Synagogue.
