Herta Rosenberg bought the books for her baby daughter, Ruth, prior to leaving Germany after the Kristallnacht pogrom [in November 1938].
Karl and Herta Rosenberg from Cologne, Germany were active Communists which resulted in their arrest and imprisonment in 1936. Herta, who was pregnant, gave birth while in prison to their daughter, Ruth. Mother and child were released a few months later but Karl remained in prison and was later sent to Auschwitz where he was murdered.
In 1939, after the Kristallnacht pogrom, Herta decided to leave Germany with her young daughter. Before leaving for England she bought a collection of German children's books in the hope that Ruth would remember the language. The children's books that were donated to the artifacts collection, accompanied Ruth throughout her childhood.
