New: Auschwitz Album in Farsi Uploaded to Yad Vashem Persian Website

23 September 2008

A new online exhibit of the Auschwitz Album has been uploaded to Yad Vashem’s Persian website. The new exhibit contains background information about Auschwitz, 60 pictures and short explanations from the Album itself, aerial photos of Auschwitz taken by the Allied Air Forces during World War II, and survivor testimonies, all in Farsi.

The Auschwitz Album is the only surviving visual evidence of the process of mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The photos show the arrival and selection at Auschwitz of Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia in 1944. The photos in the album show the entire process except for the killing itself. More information about the Auschwitz Album is available here. The entire Album is on display at Yad Vashem.

In January 2007, Yad Vashem launched a site in Farsi, including 20 historical chapters with dozens of photos - arranged chronologically, from the rise of the Nazis to power until the post-war trials. Some 100,000 people visited the Farsi website thus far. “In 2007, there were more than 7 million visits to yadvashem.org. Clearly, there is widespread interest in the Holocaust. We believe that making credible, comprehensive information about the Holocaust available to Persian speakers can contribute to the fight against Holocaust denial,” said Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev.
