Main Events Marking Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day 2008

Holocaust Remembrance Day will be marked this year on May 1, 2008. This year’s central theme is “Holocaust Survivors in Israel: 60 Years Since the Establishment of the State.” A number of events are scheduled for the week of April 27:

  • April 28, 2008: “My Homeland: Holocaust Survivors in Israel” a new exhibition that will open in the presence of the Prime Minister. The exhibition, which will be displayed in the Exhibitions Pavilion at Yad Vashem, presents the story of Holocaust survivors in the shaping of Israeli identity, and how their influence permeated every aspect of Israeli society.

  • April 28-30, 2008: A unique three-day international conference on new research on “North Africa and its Jews during the Second World War”. The conference will bring together 21 researchers from Europe, the United States and Israel, and will be held in English, Hebrew and French. Organized by The International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem and the Yad Ben Zvi Institute’s Center for Information Documentation and Research on North-African Jewry during WWII, it will take place at the Yad Ben Zvi Institute in Jerusalem.

  • April 30, 2008, 20:00: The Official Opening Ceremony for Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day will take place at the Warsaw Ghetto Square, Yad Vashem, Mt of Remembrance, Jerusalem, with the participation of the President and Prime Minister of Israel. The ceremony will be broadcast live on television on Channels 1, 2, 10 and 33 and by radio on Kol Israel and Galei Zahal. Stills and TV coverage will be via POOL; details will follow.

  • May 1, 2008: Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day. A wreath-laying ceremony, with the participation of the Prime Minister, President, survivors, dignitaries and others, will take place at 10:00. Throughout the day, various events will take place at Yad Vashem. (Details will follow.)

  • May 1, 2008: Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day. Ceremony for youth movements with the participation of hundreds of youth, in the Valley of Communities at Yad Vashem. As always, information and educational material will be available on www.yadvashem.org.
