Shai Azoulay was born in 1971 in Kiryat Shmona, Israel. When he was eight years old, the overhanging threat of Katyusha rockets motivated his family to move to Arad, where he grew up with panoramic views of the desert.
He discovered an interest in painting while traveling in the Far East after his IDF service. In 2000, Azoulay finished his BFA from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and he completed his MFA with honors in 2007.
Since 2010, Azulay has been a lecturer in Bezalel's external studies program and its Haredi branch. His art has been displayed at several one-man and group exhibitions in Israel and around the world.
He is the recipient of many prizes, including the Mifal Hapayis Landau Prize for Arts and Sciences (2020); the Ministry of Culture's Creative Encouragement Award, (2018); the Ministry of Culture and Sport's Artist-Teacher Award, (2008–2010); the Legacy Heritage Fund Prize, Tel Aviv Museum (2007); and the Osnat Mozes Prize, The Jerusalem Artists' House, (2007).
"My encounter with Yad Vashem pried open a deeper level within myself. Even I have no idea where it will lead me. It's like discovering a new part of myself, and far from being over, I see this process as just beginning."
Shai Azoulay
