Malva Schalek lived in Vienna, where she worked as a renowned portrait artist. In March 1938, during the Anschluss, she escaped to Czechoslovakia. In February 1942, she was arrested and deported on Transport W to Terezin. In May 1944, she was sent on Transport Eb to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was murdered in September 1944.
