In 1935, despite the racial laws, Charlotte Salomon was admitted to the Academy Arts in Berlin. Following Kristallnacht in 1938, she found refuge in the south of France. There, Salomon created the autobiographical illustrated musical play Life? or Theatre? that comprised more than 700 paintings. In September 1943, she was arrested and deported to the Drancy detention camp. On 7 October, she was deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered.
