Jakob Szer (1895-1944)
Born in Vilna, Szer worked as an artist and art teacher in the Gymnasium and Jewish schools in the city. After the German occupation in 1941, he was interned with his wife and two children in the Vilna ghetto. There he drew signs, paintings and portraits for the SS. He was also among the founders of the writers’ and artists’ union in the ghetto. When the ghetto was liquidated in the summer of 1943, Szer was deported to a camp in Viavara, Estonia, where he was murdered.
