The Germans arrived on September 9, 1939, and began a regime of persecution. A Judenrat was established at the end of 1939. By 1941, with refugees pouring in, the ghetto was packed with 10,000-13,000 Jews. By February 1943, all the Jews from Sanok had been deported to Belzec Death Camp.
