Within three years after the establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, approximately 600,000 immigrants arrived in the new state. These immigrants practically doubled the population of the state. The majority of the new arrivals were Holocaust survivors, and the rest were either from the Arab countries or the Americas.
The "Negba" originally served as a supply ship in Alaska. The majority of immigrants who reached Israel in its first few months of independence were enlisted in the army and sent to train and then to the battlefield. In October 1948 the second lull in the fighting ended and hostilities resumed. Consequently, many of the immigrants who arrived at this time were enlisted and sent into battle.
The “Negba” continued to bring Jews to Israel from Morocco (via Marseilles), France, and Italy until the mid 1950s.
