On 12 May 1943, Marta Waldner would have celebrated her 22nd birthday. A year earlier she had been deported to Auschwitz as a forced laborer building the Birkenau camp, but in early 1943 she was murdered.
In hiding in Bratislava, Marta's mother Berta did not know of her death. Berta made a gift for her only daughter's birthday, a brooch decorated with Marta's name and the date of what should have been her 22nd birthday.
