The Shtetl: A Learning Environment

The Shtetl

The shtetl had a significant role in Eastern European Jewish life before the Holocaust. Even after its destruction, the shtetl continues to attract both popular and scholarly attention, and is still represented in art and in popular culture. This learning environment includes a variety of materials: an animated short video presenting the historical shtetl, a podcast interview with Prof. Samuel Kassow, a lesson plan on Yizkor (Memorial) Books, an interactive map of the shtetl of Gombin (Gąbin) in Poland, an academic article discussing representations of the shtetl in arts, and an interactive "memory wall" on which you can post your own memories and materials relating to your families and friends' shtetls.
