- Before starting a search, it is recommended that the user first define the subject as clearly as possible. It is even a good idea to prepare an "inventory list" of terms or names to search.General topics such as “the Holocaust” or “the fate of the Jews from 1933-1945” should be avoided, rather search for topics such as: “daily life in the Warsaw Ghetto” or “children in concentration camps” or “deportation of the French Jews”.
- Conduct the search for names of places in Latin characters.
- It is suggested that you make an intersecting expanded search by using the "Advanced Search" option. For example, if you are interested in "daily life in the Warsaw Ghetto", enter "Warsaw" in the "Places" field, and "daily life" in the "Keywords" field; a search for "children in concentration camps" can be conducted by entering "children and camps" in the "Keywords" field, and "deportation of the French Jews" by entering "deportations" in the "Keywords" field, and "France" in the "Places" field.
- Filtering of photographs in albums is done by entering "FA" in the "Registry Code" field.
- This database is not intended for searching the names of people who were murdered in the Holocaust, although it is possible to find thousands of photographs of people who were murdered in the Holocaust in it.Should you be searching for names of people murdered in the Holocaust, it is recommended that you search in the Central Database of Shoah Victims’ Names as well.
- In the event that your search definition is too broad (such as searching for “ghetto” or “Lodz”), it is suggested that you use the built-in filters or the “Advanced Search” option.
- Those who have submitted photographs to Yad Vashem can search for them according to the access number they were sent in the letter from Yad Vashem acknowledging receipt of the photograph.Enter the access number in the “Archival Signature” field in the “Advanced Search” option.
Visiting the Yad Vashem Photo Archive
You can visit the Yad Vashem Archives and search for photographs with help from the staff there. Searches made at the Yad Vashem Archives Reading Room are conducted using a computer interface similar to that of the Yad Vashem website interface, and the photographs are viewed on the computer screen. Original copies of the photographs are not available for viewing by visitors in order to protect and preserve the original materials.
