In March 1945, the Germans attacked Slovak villages in retaliation for the Slovak National Uprising. Seren Weiss, a young Jewish woman who had joined the ranks of the partisans in Slovakia, was in the village of Kaliste with her daughter when German soldiers set fire to the homes of the village. A German officer moved Seren and her daughter Ruth into one of the few homes that wasn't destroyed.
With the approach of the Red Army and the retreat of the German Army, the officer left the gramophone with Seren and her daughter, Ruth.
