Laszlo Fried from Budapest was drafted into a Hungarian labor battalion and sent to Subotica, where he met Klara Mannheim. Laszlo and Klara got married in April 1944, but one month later Klara was deported to Auschwitz.
In the short time they were together, Klara made Laszlo a fabric envelope embroidered with his nickname, "Laci".
In the letter addressed to Laszlo that she threw from the deportation train, she wrote:
"Dear Laszlo, I bid you farewell. God be with you. I don't know where, but we have to go. Perhaps fate will bring us together. I love you. I didn't think it would end so fast. Love you.
Your little wife, Klari"
Klara and Laszlo survived the war and were reunited in Budapest.
