Clairette Vigder from Paris, France loved to draw. She learned to read and write early on in the war, and decorated her notebooks with colorful illustrations alongside her writing and arithmetic exercises.
In 1942, as the situation worsened for the Jews of Paris, Clairette's parents did not allow Clairette and her baby brother out of the house. Forced to remain indoors, six-year-old Clairette spent much of her time drawing. The many drawings in this notebook express her feelings and her hopes during this period.
In early 1943, Clairette's father was arrested and sent to the Drancy camp. After he was deported, Clairette's mother began looking for a hiding place for seven- year-old Clairette and two-year-old Isidore. With the help of the OSE (Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants) rescue organization, the children were hidden with Christian families. Their rescuers included Marie and Lucien Noel, Georgette Schwarz and Lucienne Clement de Lepine, who were later recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. Clairette became a second mother to her baby brother, and reported to her mother in letters and drawings how they were getting on at their new homes. Clairette survived, as did her mother and brother. Her father was murdered at Auschwitz.
