After the Germans occupied Belgium, Ze'ev and Netti (Necha) Toporek fled with their three children, Bernard, Leo and Ruth to France, but they were forced to return to Charleroi, Belgium. With the help of a relative who had connections with the Belgian resistance, the family was able to find places to hide. Ruth worked as a nurse under an assumed name in a Christian hospital in Namur for about two years. Her parents and two brothers moved around from one hiding place to another.
While she was working at the hospital, Ruth asked a local silversmith to fashion two rings, one for her and the other for her mother, from some silver coins that she had received. Their initials were engraved on these rings.
The family survived the war and immigrated to Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine).
Ruth and Netti continued to wear these rings after the war, but after Ruth's ring was stolen she decided to donate her mother's ring to Yad Vashem to be preserved in the Artifacts Collection.
