Remnant of the 'Maccabi' flag cut into twelve parts before the deportation of the Hachshara (training farm) participants to Auschwitz

One portion of the “Maccabi Hatzair” flag from the Ahrensdorf training farm for Jewish youth in Germany

On the eve of the deportations to the death camps, the youths and their leaders participated in a ceremony in which their Hachshara (training farm) flag was cut into twelve pieces and distributed among the leaders. They swore to reunite in the land of Israel and remake the torn pieces into a complete flag. Only three of the twelve leaders survived the Holocaust and of the survivors only Anneliese Borinski managed to bring her piece of the flag to the land of Israel.
