Chaya (Schwarzman) Kaplan was born in Lithuania. During the Holocaust, she was deported to the Stutthof camp, where the prisoners were allowed to keep their civilian clothes, which were marked with a Star of David. She had this coat until liberation. When she returned to Kovno, she had a seamstress remake the coat into a dress, hiding the red Star of David on the reverse side of the material. Shortly afterwards, she wore the dress at her wedding. When asked how this made her feel, she replied:
"I felt wonderful, it was a symbol of freedom. That's why I kept it".
