After the war broke out, twins Kuba and Lipa Jaget and their sister hid with their parents in a dark cramped space under a Polish family's pigpen for nearly two years. Once a week they would briefly light a candle, during which time the twins would draw pictures. On one occasion, Kuba offered to help their rescuers' daughter with her homework – anatomical diagrams that she had to submit to her teacher. She brought him her anatomy textbook and Kuba copied diagrams from the book for her.
After the Red Army liberated the area, the Jagets finally emerged from their hiding place.
