Ruth Steckelmacher went to a Jewish school in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her Hebrew textbook contains illustrations of everyday objects accompanied by their names in Hebrew and Czech. With her mother's encouragement she joined a Zionist youth movement that advocated immigrating to Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine). In November 1939, groups of young Zionists, including Ruth, managed to leave occupied Czechoslovakia (the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) and sail to Eretz Israel from Italy.
