Israel Mizrahi's Shofar

Following the occupation of Belgium by Nazi Germany, Israel Mizrahi, cantor of a synagogue in Antwerp, was deported to the Mechelen camp with his wife Esther and their two children Yosef and Lilly. Thinking that they would return soon, they locked their house and handed the keys to the Gestapo.

In December 1943, Israel was deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he was murdered. Esther, Yosef and Lilly were deported to the Ravensbruck camp and survived. After the war, Esther and her children, returned to Belgium. Although other people were now living in her home, Esther was able to get some of their belongings, including the shofar, returned to them.
