At the end of February 1942 a local non-Jewish inhabitant informed the field commandant's office in Yevpatoria about 114 mountain Jews living in Shaumyan about whose existence the Germans had not known. On March 4, 1942 a unit dispatched by the field commandant's office, together with SD men, arrived in Shaumyan, assembled the 98 Jews it found, took them outside the village, and shot them in the vicinity of Vorobyovka village near the road connecting it with Shaumyan.

Antonina Pankratova, who was born in 1928 and lived in Shaumyan vicinity during the war years, testified: Interview by Mikhail Tyaglyi and Tatyana Velichko in 2010
- On the Red Hill, on the road… - What is the Red Hill? Is it really a hill? - No, just a place on the road. The grave was there, and it should’ve been maintained, but who cares? If you go to Shaumian, on the left side of the road, you see many stones. That’s where they were all shot. - So if I go from here to Shaumian, it is on the left side of the road? - Yes. - Can we find it somehow? - If you know where it is, you can. - Could you do that? - I don’t know. There used to be a lot of stones… I don’t even remember the last time I went there.
