Shortly after the German occupation of the town the Germans locked about 100 old Jewish men into a small shop, closed the windows and the doors, and placed guards outside. By the next morning most of the men had suffocated to death. The victims were buried near the place where a statue of Lenin had been located in the center of town and, after a month, they were reburied at the Jewish cemetery.

On July 30, 1941 the Germans locked over 50 [according to another source, 89] Jewish men into the premises of a small shop. They were packed in like herring in a barrel… . The windows and the door were closed and guards were placed around it. In the morning all the men were dead. In the morning women from the town were taken and forced to dig a pit near the place where a statue of Lenin had been located, to move all the bodies to the pit, and to cover it over. After a month they were made to rebury them at the Jewish cemetery.
