According to Soviet reports, in September-December 1941 about 1,000 civilians were murdered in the garden of the local pedagogical institute. It is unknown how many of the victims were Jews. The perpetrators were apparently members of Einsatzkommando 6 of Einsatzgruppe C.

Apart from [covering] extensive rural districts, the following towns, all of a defintely industrial character and densely populated, were dealt with... Novo-Moskovsk (30,000 [total] inhabitants)....
