Murder Story of Nezhin Jews at the Clinker Brick Factory

Murder Site

Ukraine (USSR)
According to different sources between 300 and 500 Jews were in Nezhin during the Nazi occupation. Sonderkommando 4a arrived in Nezhin in November 1941. The local Jews were ordered to appear for registration and were told that they were going to be moved. They were also told to take all their valuables with them. Those who refused to appear were taken by force by local Ukrainian policemen. All the Jews who appeared for "registration" were incarcerated in the Nezhin prison. Shortly afterwards - on November 3 (according to one testimony) or on the eve of November 6, 1941 (according to another testimony) the Jews had to march along Moskovskaya Street and were taken by truck under heavy guard to a quarry on the territory of the clinker-brick factory, where they were ordered to undress and then were shot dead by members of the Sonderkommando and of the German gendarmerie. The Jews of Nezhin were shot in at least two groups at the clinker-brick factory: first the adult males and then the women and children. Ukrainian policemen from Nezhin were present at the shootings but did not themselves shoot Jews.

Sara Geskina testified:
… The tragedy took place on November 6 [1941] at about 5 p. m. We children and teenagers were taken by truck to quarries of the clinker-brick factory, where we heard shooting. The SS-men shot women, old people, and children in the back of the neck. The Ukrainian policemen were only present during this event [but they did not shoot the Jews]. I will never forget how the murderers grabbed a baby from its mother's arms, threw it into the air, and competed to see who would be the first to shoot it…. 500 Jews from Nezhin were shot dead at the quarries on [this] one occasion….
