Murder story of Gorodnitsa Jews in the Zikov Ravine

Murder Site
Zikov Ravine
Ukraine (USSR)
According to some sources, 21 Jews and non-Jews of Gorodnitsa, including old people, were shot at the Zikov Ravine, located not far from Gorodnitsa on 19 July 1941, a short time after the occupation began. Apparently, the shootings continued at the same place after that time. Soviet reports that contain the lists of Gorodnitsa county victims, among them the ones from Gorodnitsa itself, state that Jews were also murdered in November and December 1941, while a few of them were reported to have been shot later, in the winter of 1943.

Alexander Provotorov, local historian, related: Interview by Mikhail Tyaglyy in 2015
We are in Gorodnitsa which used to be in Gorodnitsa County before 1956. About 30 Jewish victims were killed by the Germans not far from here, in the Zikov Ravine. The first shooting was on July 19, 1941. 21 people were shot then. There is a list of victims in the archive. Only one name was identified, that of Lea Krause. The rest of the shootings are documented in the State Archives of Zhitomir District. Most of the Jews who worked at the china factory were evacuated [or succeeded in fleeing as individuals] but those who remained were shot to death.
