From the interrogation of Paul Zapp, January 8, 1968, Munich
Upon my arrival in Bakhchisaray I was informed about the operation [which had been carried out) against the Jews. When … I was confronted with the activity report of the local commandants office from December 14, 1941, according to which on December 13, 1941 the Security Service carried out the deportation of 40 Jewish families consisting of a total of 90 persons, I responded that it [this report] refers to the operation that I mentioned before. Therefore, I suppose that I arrived in Bakhchisaray after December 13, 1941. … as I have already stated. I know that an anti-Jewish operation was carried out in Bakhchisaray. At that time, as I have already said, I wasn't yet in Bakhchisaray. I learned about this mass murder (action) only subsequently, after my arrival [in Bakchisaray]. The execution that was mentioned above was carried out [on the orders of] Obershturmfuehrer P.

Activity report of the local commandant’s office Bakhchisaray, December 14th, 1941
A census of the residents and a copy of the list of residents [to be handed over] were ordered for [each ethnic] community [of the city] in order to determine who was a local resident and who was not. [In regard to] nationality….40 Jewish families with a total number of 90 persons were [still] living in Bakhchisaray….The Jews who were living there were not rich: they were living fairly modestly. The SD carried out the deportation of these Jews on December 13, 1941.
