Can We Use Nazi Medical Research in Order to Help Save Lives Today?

New Online Lecture Series by Yad Vashem

04 June 2020

Physicians swear to do no harm when they take the Hippocratic Oath, but what happens when that ideal clashes with real life-and-death decisions? What kinds of dilemmas did Jewish medical professionals face during the Holocaust? Should Nazi medical research be used in order to help save lives today?

"Do No Harm – Medical Ethics and the Holocaust" is a unique online panel discussion featuring Prof. Dan Michman, Head of Yad Vashem's International Institute for Holocaust Research, and Dr. Benjamin Gesundheit, physician and expert in Medical Ethics. The 90-minute panel, taking place on Thursday 11 June at 9:00pm (Israel time)/2.00pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) will be moderated by Yad Vashem Senior Historian Dr. David Silberklang.

During these unprecedented times, when members of the public are temporarily unable to visit the Mount of Remembrance  in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem is offering a vast selection of free online resources about the Holocaust, including exhibitions, articles and video presentations. This new series of online lectures is being launched, in several languages, for audiences worldwide. The public will have the opportunity to hear from renowned Yad Vashem experts, historians and researchers on various compelling and timely topics.

Henry (Heinz Lichtwitz) was only six years old was sent out of Germany alone to escape the terror of the Third Reich. He was one of 10,000 Jewish children rescued through the Kindertransport program, which sent them to live in safety with families in England. From the moment they parted, Max Lichtwitz, Henry's father, sent his son colorful postcards – initially in German, and later in English when Henry no longer remembered his native tongue. The postcards were illustrated with humorous drawings and charming pictures, and each contained short, loving message from his devoted father.
