10th International Conference on Holocaust Education

Over 350 international leaders in Holocaust education, from 50 countries, recently gathered at Yad Vashem's International School for Holocaust Studies for its 10th International Conference on Holocaust Education. The conference presented lectures, panel discussions and interactive workshops by some of the world's leading Holocaust historians, scholars and educators. Participants had the opportunity to meet and interact with Holocaust survivors, they networked with colleagues and peers from around the world and encountered new ideas for effective teaching methods.

Prince William's Historic Visit to Yad Vashem

In June, 2018 HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, visited Yad Vashem. Accompanied by Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev, the Prince toured the Holocaust History Museum, met with Paul Alexander and Henry Foner, who were just young children when they managed to flee Nazi Germany as part of the Kindertransport and paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust during a memorial ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance. He left a message of remembrance and hope in the Yad Vashem Guest Book mentioning his great-grandmother Princess Alice who was recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for her heroic efforts to rescue Jews during the Holocaust.

New Exhibition: "They Say There Is a Land"

Longings for Eretz Israel during the Holocaust

Marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel, Yad Vashem opened a new exhibition, "They Say There is a Land: Longings for Eretz Israel during the Holocaust." Through artworks, artifacts, diaries, letters and testimonies collected by Yad Vashem over the years, the exhibition tells how Jews yearned for Zion during and immediately following the Shoah in the years 1933-1948 – from the rise of the Nazi party to power in Germany, through the outbreak of World War II and the destruction of European and North African Jewry, and until the end of the war and the establishment of the State of Israel.

Avenues of Rescue During the Holocaust

During the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust, the focus of research was on the actions of the murderers and on resistance. That situation changed gradually during the 1960s and 1970s. Yad Vashem’s eighteenth biannual conference, titled “Hiding, Sheltering and Borrowing Identities as Avenues of Rescue during the Holocaust,” brought together a large number of international scholars to discuss new approaches and the current state of research on the topic. This volume, based on a selection of papers that were presented at the conference, aims to provide an overview of the multi-faceted landscape of academic studies on the rescuers and the rescued. Yad Vashem Mission – Generation to Generation – Israel @ 70

In July, some 100 participants in Yad Vashem's 2018 Generation to Generation Mission journeyed from Austria to Israel, all while connecting with each other and their shared heritage. Through visits to concentration camps, mission participants commemorated the Holocaust and honored the four survivors who travelled with them and the victims who were murdered. Upon arrival in Israel, participants visited the Mount of Remembrance and learned about Yad Vashem's far-reaching activities, they met Israel's President Reuven Rivlin and rejoiced as Israel marks its 70th year. Mission participants walked away from the experience deeply moved and committed to ensuring that the history and personal stories from the Shoah will never be forgotten.
