from Efim Simkin's Memories about the War

"…Of course, I wanted to go to my native city of Kiev, which still breathed the air of war. It was 1944. I was wearing a soldier's overcoat and a field cap; I was an invalid of the [Great] Patriotic War. Here, in Babi Yar, lay [the bodies of] the people who were dearest to me – my brothers, their wives and children.

Several of my compositions [paintings] on the subject of Babi Yar – God and Death, Before Being Shot, They Are Going to Babi Yar, and At Babi Yar – date from recent years."Iefim Simikin, Catalogue of the exhibition of the cycle of paintings entitled "Sign Posts of Memory," Moscow, 1980.
