My dearest only son,
Don’t be angry and don’t feel bad: I am writing my final letter to you.
Sighet, Transylvania, April 1944
Following the invasion of Hungary by the German army, a ghetto was established for the Jewish residents of the area as a way-station prior to their deportation to Auschwitz. Among the 13,000 Jews transferred to the ghetto were the Herstik family – Meshulam and Etel and their daughters Rakhel and Alice.
