Europe Commemorates the Holocaust, Yad Vashem provides ceremonies on its Web site

23 January 2003

On January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz- Birkenau, countries throughout Europe, including Germany, Sweden, England, Italy, Finland and Estonia will commemorate the Holocaust. The Council of Europe also sponsors a project for schools in each of the council's 48 member states to choose the day on which they wish to memorialize the systematic attempt by the Nazis to exterminate the Jewish race, and to teach about this watershed event in world history.

The International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem has prepared online suggestions for organizing Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremonies, including readings, music selections, and resources. On the Yad Vashem Web site, suggested memorial ceremonies and educational activities are presented to mark Holocaust Remembrance day. The activities were designed to help educators, community leaders, and other interested individuals commemorate the Holocaust. Programs focus on various perspectives of the individual experience in Auschwitz using literature, testimonies, songs, prayers and photos. The information is accessible from the home page at: www1.yadvashem.org

Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies is responsible for education in Israel and abroad. Activities provided by the School include study seminars, teacher training programs, curricula development, overseas programming and publications. Seminars for educators are offered in over 10 different languages. The International School for Holocaust Studies offers an Online Bookstore, where educational materials, available in different languages and designed for both formal and informal frameworks, are available for purchase.
