Jews in a street in the Kovno Ghetto, Lithuania
In 1939 about 40,000 Jews lived in Kovno. The Germans occupied Kovno on June 24, 1941 and within 6 weeks, 10,000 Jews were murdered. When the ghetto was closed off in August 1941, it contained 29,670 Jews. By November of that year, another 12,000 were murdered. Kovno was liberated on August 1,1944.
