The Germans occupied Riga on July 1,1941 and immediately began killing or imprisoning thousands of Jews. Shortly thereafter the 32,000 Jewish residents of Riga were deported into ghettos. By the end of the year between 25,000 – 28,000 Jews from the ghettos had been murdered. In December 1943, the Jewish community was completely destroyed. Riga was liberated on October 13, 1944.
