The Toy, Which I Would Never Leave…

Rimtautė Radzevičienė, Lithuania

Invitation of the Exhibition: 'The Toy Which I Would Never Leave...'

On January 27, 2011, an International Holocaust Remembrance Day project, was organized at the Gymnasium Information Center in Palanga, Lithuania, including an exhibition of drawings and sketches entitled, "The Toy Which I Would Never Leave..." The works displayed were based upon the ”Three Dolls” project, carried out by 9th and 10th grade high school students. During the framework of their art lessons, pedagogical and methodological materials related to the Yad Vashem resource, “Three Dolls,” were introduced.

Approximately 200 students, between the ages of fifteen and sixteen years old who study art at our school in Palanga, participated.

This project was carried out in four stages:

The Toy, Which I Would Never Leave…

  • Stage 1: During art classes we read the stories about the three dolls, sketched our childhood dolls, debated and reflected on our impressions over the course of two weeks.
  • Stage 2: Over the course of the next two weeks, the drawings were completed, and the best ones were selected for the exhibition. We collected archival photos from the internet.
  • Stage 3: In cooperation with technical experts at the high school, the group of students created four collages, 80cm x 100cm including archival photographs. These posters served as an introduction to the main project, entitled “Three Dolls”.
  • Stage 4: In addition to the drawings and the posters, we prepared sets for a theater production based on the play, “Three Dolls.” The students rehearsed scenes of the play and performed it.
