Who were the madrichim (youth leaders) in the Theresienstadt ghetto, and what was their special role? This activity deals with a phenomenon that was unique to the Theresienstadt ghetto - it was the madrichim who were responsible for children in the children's homes. In these homes an alternative framework to the family cell was established, and the role of the madrichim was formative and decisive.
In this activity we will try to understand to what extent this framework succeeded in providing a substitute for the family, and what was the role undertaken by the madrichim. We will look at this through the eyes of the children and the expressions they used when describing the madrichim.
