This activity seeks out the inner world of children in the ghetto, as reflected in the newspaper "Kamarad" which children wrote, illustrated and printed for their personal interest and pleasure. The activity focuses on a story published in installments in the newspaper, about a family with a funny name and the everyday incidents that take place, told in humorous language. But this amusing story contains within it the tragedy of Czech Jewry from the moment they arrived in the ghetto, and their lives there until the Germans expelled them to the death camps.
Two of the questions we have tried to answer when writing this activity are: how much did the children know and understand about the "real" situation in which they lived, and what means did they adopt in order to cope with the situation around them

With every fiber of our being we long to get away from here, to go far away from this place. But suddenly I feel a kind of twinge and something pulls me back.: It is the friendship of the girls in our room with whom I have learned to live, with whom I have become a single whole. Together we have been through good and bad, joy and sorrow, and it will be difficult for me to part from them. |
