On the night of July 3, 1942 the Germans captured Vakhnovka village and held the Jews in the local Catholic Church. Towards morning some Jews were ordered to dig pits in the Turbov forest near Penkovka. Several hours later, after being tortured, 413 Jews were taken to the pits and shot to death.
